Spatiotemporal Variation in Distribution, Size, and Relative Abundance within a Salish Sea Nearshore Forage Fish Community

چکیده

Forage fish are schooling species commonly occurring in both offshore pelagic and nearshore coastal habitats. Beyond use by some for spawning, the dynamics of habitat not well understood. The objective our study was to evaluate spring–summer forage occurrence habitats Strait Juan de Fuca, Washington. We suspected that changes resulting from removal two large dams on Elwha River (2009–2011) may have altered presence abundance. Monthly beach seine sampling four regions along 40 km shoreline conducted April September between 2006 2019. caught nearly 600,000 fish, comprising 82 different species. Nine accounted 81.7% all fishes caught; most were classified as postlarvae juveniles based size. There spatial differences assemblage sites but no discernable year effects obvious impact dam community composition. Three represented 78.8% catch: Pacific Herring Clupea pallasii, Sand Lance Ammodytes hexapterus, Surf Smelt Hypomesus pretiosus. used a Bayesian generalized linear mixed model temporal variability probability these Each exhibited unique pattern intra-annual, interannual, regional fluctuations. progressively increased monthly, decreased, peaked June. Temporal variations distribution abundance likely driven life history biological requirements. speculate specific characteristics each region, including proximity spawning areas, spawn timing, extant current patterns, ecosystem processes, drove

Diversity and distribution of larval and juvenile fish in nearshore waters of the Southeastern Caspian Sea and Gorgan Bay

Occurrence and distribution of larval and juvenile fish was investigated in nearshore waters of the southeastern Caspian Sea including the Gorgan Bay. Samples were collected during seven surveys using a fine mesh beach-seine in five sampling sites from July 2014 to June 2015. A total of 15500 individuals mostly juvenile were captured, representing 18 species from 8 families. Most juveniles belo...

Intron size, abundance, and distribution within untranslated regions of genes.

Most research concerning the evolution of introns has largely considered introns within coding sequences (CDSs), without regard for introns located within untranslated regions (UTRs) of genes. Here, we directly determined intron size, abundance, and distribution in UTRs of genes using full-length cDNA libraries and complete genome sequences for four species, Arabidopsis thaliana, Drosophila mel...

Diversity, relative abundance, new locality records, and updated fish fauna of the Ross Sea region

Two surveys were carried out in the Ross Sea region during February and March 2004 and 2008 from the New Zealand RV Tangaroa. Fishes were sampled on the continental shelf and slope of the Ross Sea, and on adjacent seamounts to the north, mainly using a large demersal fish trawl and a large mesopelagic fish trawl. Parts of the shelf and slope were stratified by depth and at least three random de...

Size-Based Hydroacoustic Measures of Within-Season Fish Abundance in a Boreal Freshwater Ecosystem

Eleven sequential size-based hydroacoustic surveys conducted with a 200 kHz split-beam transducer during the summers of 2011 and 2012 were used to quantify seasonal declines in fish abundance in a boreal reservoir in Manitoba, Canada. Fish densities were sufficiently low to enable single target resolution and tracking. Target strengths converted to log2-based size-classes indicated that smaller...
